CHAPTER 17
When Pete finally reached the beach after over an hour of slogging through the mid-day humidity, he sprinted to the water and flopped down in the waves to cool himself. The water that got in his mouth, despite its salty ocean flavor, tasted clean. He didnât drink it; instead, he swished it around and spit several times. They didnât seem to have toothbrushes here, so this would have to do.
The water at the beaches near his home in Florida wasnât clean enough to want anywhere near your mouth, and if you were unfortunate enough to get a gulp full, you spat it out. That water was gritty and thick in comparison with the water here at the island.
Wading further out, Pete soaked in the coolness of the deeper water. He allowed the small incoming waves to slosh against him in their uneven rhythm.
He laid on his back in the water, opting to float for a while. As he laid there looking up at the bright blue sky, he thought about how some business tycoon would love to get his claws on a place like this for some multimillion-dollar resort. It would be themed as ridiculous Aztec Pyramids, or something equally as stupid and out of place. Thatâs what they did with places like this, wasnât it? But they had no clue this place even existed, and it was his. All his. Or at least it felt like it was, even though it actually belonged to the Luscanos. Still, they had invited him in and made him part of the family. So, in a small way, he felt like he belonged here.
Sure, they might be primitiveâ¦He knew that word wasnât quite right, but he couldnât think of any better way to describe them. They didnât even wear shoes. But somehow, he knew that if any of the tycoons ever came to this place to try to swipe it out from under them, they would be sent packing with an arrow up their ass. He smiled, maliciously at the thought of that. He could visualize it perfectly.
After a while of daydreaming, he realized that just floating there wasnât doing a very good job of getting him clean. He remembered having heard somewhere that people used to use sand to scrub themselves clean, back in the times before soap. But after trying it for a few seconds, he decided it must be a myth. That or people used to have elephant skin, not delicate skin like his own, because it almost immediately felt like, well, like rubbing himself with sandpaper.
That was stupid, he thought, as he chided himself for not having predicted it wouldnât work. He proceeded to just scrub himself with his hands in the saltwater. He wondered if this was going to make a difference in the end. His Mother had always acted like it was the end of the world if he took a bath or shower and didnât soap up.
He splashed his face and shook the water from his curly hair.
